Island Preservation
Committed to long-term growth management, the town’s Land Bank program regularly purchases land (taking it off the market) in order to limit island development densities and increase public green spaces. In addition, the town’s Natural Resources Division enforces the provisions of Chapter 6 of the Land Management Ordinance, including preservation of trees and native vegetation, wetlands, and beaches. The Division reviews all development projects to assure that natural resources are protected to the maximum extent possible. They work closely with developers and property owners to accomplish the goals of maintaining a liveable environment for our residents, visitors and wildlife. They strive to become involved in all aspects of resource protection, including protection of the loggerhead sea turtle, testing and monitoring of the island’s water quality, creation of wildlife corridors and education of the general public.
